Synopsis

BACKGROUND
The agriculture sector is a key to overall economic growth and development of Uganda. With one of the
highest population growth rates in the Africa region 3.2% p.a, Uganda depends on Agriculture to support
livelihoods of 73% of the households, provides employment for about 33.8 % (UBOS, 2014) of the economically
active population, and over 80% of the poorest of the population. 95% of the farmers are smallholders
with landholdings averaging 2 ha. The proportional contribution of the agricultural sector to the Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) of Uganda currently stands at about 20.9 percent. The agricultural sector contributes
80 percent of the export earnings. The current real growth rate in agricultural output (2013/14) is estimated
at 2.9% compared to the 6% growth target of the AUs comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development
Program (CAADP).
